Research Internships

Diplo have granted three-month research internships as fellowships for five participants from the 2006 capacity building programme.  These interns are working on key issues currently high on the agenda of the IG debate for the developing world.  These papers aim to examine the current situation and offer possible recommendations for the consideration of policy makers. The proposed research titles include:

  1. Multilingualism: Raquel Aguirre
  2. Net neutrality and development: the challenge for Latin America - Guilherme Almeida
  3. Identity theft in developing countries’ online banking industry: a real threat or an artificial technological need - Alfonso Avila
  4. Infrastructure costs for reasonable Internet access costs in developing countries - Biljana Glisovic & Nityesh Bhatt

Commonwealth Connects e-Partnership Summit

Diplo associate & Hon. Coordinator for IG in India, Dr. Dhrupad Mathur attended the Commonwealth Connects e-Partnership Summit in New Delhi and participated in discussions on “Policy Development & Regulatory Capacity”, highlighting Internet Governance issues.  Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon and the Chairperson of Commonwealth Connects, Dr Michael Frendo, who is the Foreign Minister of Malta, also spoke at the event. Fellowship in Geneva

Two participants from last year's capacity building programme have been selected for a two month fellowship with the Secretariat of the Internet Governance Forum in Geneva.  The Secretariat, has been keen to support participants from least developed and African countries. Ulemu Nyasulu from Malawi and John Walubengo from Kenya, were both chosen based on their participation during the Internet Governance Capacity Building Programme and their contribution to the broader IG community in their region.  They will be commencing their internships in summer 2007.


IGCBP 2007

The Internet Governance Capacity Building Programme for 2007 was launched last week.  In response to the demand for the programme, the 2007 programme has increased its intake to 138 participants, supported by a larger tutoring team.  The programme will run from March - October. More...

Commonwealth Connects International e-Partnership Summit

The Commonwealth Connects International e-Partnership is launching a high-profile event from the 23-24 March 2007 in New Delhi, India. The Summit will bring together ICT Ministers from around the Commonwealth, CEOs, Managing Directors and other senior people from the private sector and ICT world, Government officials, international agencies and senior representatives from Civil Society.

Diplo associate Dr.Dhrupad Mathur will be attending the Summit in an effort to raise awareness on IG issues related to bridging the digital divide.

The Commonwealth Connects Programme aims to bridge the deepening Digital Divide across the 53 countries of the Commonwealth.
